The ATF precisely controls friction in the clutch packs and maintains it throughout the drain interval … which is perhaps the most important property of an ATF all while providing lubrication to hundreds of moving parts even under high temperatures and extreme pressure. It has to flow easily from minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit to nearly 400, even in fine valve assemblies. It acts as a corrosion inhibitor and wear protection for the Planetary Gear sets. It acts as a hydraulic fluid, to engage clutch packs & shift the gears. The one component of the entire system that’s critical to all of these parts working properly together is the Automatic Transmission Fluid, or ATF. Finally, the Mechatronics is the “brain” of the transmission, a complex system of ports, valves and electronics that control all transmission functions. It uses two turbines which spin independently, but which are fluid coupled allowing the engine to idle while the engine is stopped and produce smoother acceleration as it shifts through the gears. The Torque Converter connects the transmission to the engine and multiplies the torque during initial acceleration. Clutches or “clutch packs” engage and disengage the gear sets. The planetary gear sets provide the chosen gear ratios for the vehicle. The pump supplies pressurized transmission fluid for many uses throughout the unit. There are several main components that make up the step-type transmission. The Dual Clutch Transmission (or DCT), the Continuously Variable Transmission (or CVT) and the step-type transmission which is the most common, especially here in the US. There are 3 basic types of automatic transmissions found throughout the world. The automatic transmission combines electrical & mechanical systems, hydraulics and computer processors to smoothly shift through the gears and transfer engine power to the drive wheels. In fact, the automatic transmission is perhaps the most complicated mechanical component in an automobile. We have everything you need for a complete service, all available with free delivery over £40, or use our Click and Collect service and everything you need will be ready at your nearest store.Automatic transmissions are now more complex than ever, placing ever-greater demands on auto transmission fluids. You can find a whole range of engine oils and fluids for sale at Halfords from leading brands at low prices. With the right tools and the right approach, it’s a job the competent home mechanic can do. We’re not going to lie, changing gearbox oil is a little trickier than an engine oil and filter swap, but not much. Changing your gearbox oil is part of a routine maintenance schedule, but if you notice a leak or swap your gearbox over, it’s crucial to replace the fluid (and fix the leak!). Use our gearbox oil selector tool to find the right oil for you. We have a wide variety of products from top brands including high quality Wynn oil and Comma oil, alongside our leading range of own-branded gearbox lubricants. It’s cheap to do and simple enough - with Halfords. Depending on your car or van, you may only need to change the oil in your gearbox every 30,000 - 60,000 miles! Changing it can ensure a smoother ride and prolong your gearbox’s lifespan. Gearbox oil keeps the complex cogs and machinery inside gearboxes performing perfectly.
